Abena Affum-McAllister has made Charles County her home for more than a decade. She earned degrees from Nyack College and the David A. Clarke School of Law before building a career focused on civic engagement, criminal justice reform, and community advocacy. Her early advocacy work included drafting and lobbying for the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator Requirements Act of 2013, legislation establishing CPR and AED programs in D.C. public schools.

Abena has held leadership roles throughout Maryland Democratic politics and community organizing. She served as Chairwoman of the Charles County Democratic Central Committee, becoming the second African American woman and youngest person in county history to lead the organization. She later became the first person from Charles County elected to an executive officer position within the Maryland Democratic Party, serving as Deputy Secretary. Professionally, Abena currently serves as Director of Criminal Justice Reform Initiatives for the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office and remains active in community organizations across Southern Maryland.

Abena Affum-McAllister Is Fighting For:

  • Community Organizing and Civic Engagement

    Abena is the founder of Women of Action Maryland, a grassroots organization focused on mentoring, civic engagement, community service, and political empowerment. Since launching the organization in 2017, its work has included organizing community events, supporting local schools and teachers, food distribution efforts, voter engagement initiatives, and programs encouraging women to pursue leadership roles and public office.

  • Criminal Justice Reform and Community Accountability

    As Director of Criminal Justice Reform Initiatives for the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office, Abena works at the intersection of public safety, accountability, and community engagement. Her advocacy has included organizing community discussions on policing and racial justice and supporting efforts focused on fair and effective criminal justice policies.

  • Public Health and Health Equity

    Abena’s career has included major work focused on health equity and public health access. Through her leadership role connected to the NIH All of Us Research Program, she helped build relationships with historically underrepresented communities to expand participation in biomedical research and improve trust in public health initiatives.

  • Leadership in Democratic Organizing

    During her tenure as Chairwoman of the Charles County Democratic Central Committee, Abena led voter outreach and candidate development efforts that significantly increased Democratic engagement and turnout in the county. She also organized the county’s first candidate training and campaign finance workshop, helping expand opportunities for local residents interested in public service.

  • Education and Youth Opportunity

    Education and youth engagement have remained central to Abena’s community work. Her efforts have included launching scholarship initiatives through the Charles County Juneteenth Committee, organizing school supply programs for teachers and students, and supporting leadership development opportunities for young people across Southern Maryland.

  • Women’s Empowerment and Community Leadership

    Much of Abena’s advocacy work has centered on expanding opportunities for women in leadership, public service, and civic life. Through Women of Action Maryland and other community organizations, she has focused on mentorship, professional development, and building networks that support women and families throughout Charles County.

  • Building Stronger Communities

    Across her civic, political, and professional work, Abena has emphasized community-centered leadership and grassroots engagement. Her experience spans public policy advocacy, nonprofit leadership, political organizing, and coalition building aimed at strengthening opportunity and civic participation across Southern Maryland.
